PSP2 Announced!

January 27, 2011

With the news of the 3DS bubbling around, with pre-orders being available, and with release in Japan next month, Sony thought they’d jump in and attempt to steal the limelight. By the looks of it, they have succeeded.

The PSP2 or NGP (Next Generation Portable) as it is being codenamed, seems to be a very powerful piece of software indeed. It features the d-pad, 2 analogue sticks and the normal X, O, Square, Triangle buttons, and an L and R button. But now it also has a touch screen and on the back has a touch sensitive panel. I’m not sure yet what it could be used for but there are strong possibilities. The PSP has also a fully sensitive sixaxis controller built in so you can play by tilting.

The hardware itself is very up to date. Being that the PS3 came out 4 years ago, it is to be expected  that it could run some serious stuff. Some developers have managed to port over PS3 games to the NGP and have them working as smooth as their PS3 counter-parts. Metal Gear Solid 4 for example.

The NGP also supports 3G and built in Wi-fi and no longer uses the horrible UMDs. Now all games come on a type of flash storage card, similar to SD cards and whatnot. This allows much larger game files, allowing developers to max out resource potential. Also new is the ability to automatically connect to NGP users in the area around you. Here you can chat to them and compare trophies and other stats like that.

Hopefully more information will be released in the near future. Enjoy the system specifications, and announced games below.
